Sipaldis, food packaging supplier: eco-design & sorting instructions

Environment: Sipaldis and its ecological food packaging

The design of environmentally friendly food packaging

For many years, Sipaldis, your food packaging supplier, has been committed to an eco-responsible approach. It aims to develop food packaging concepts that respect nature. Our cooking moulds, whether they are made of paper, cardboard or wood, are increasing in all sectors. This is simply a reflection of our customers' satisfaction and their willingness to work with eco-designed products. In addition to designing packaging in recyclable materials, we aim to offer a wider range of biodegradable and even compostable products where possible. This commitment will be our guiding principle for the years to come.

Elements of recyclability: legislation still unclear

Many food packages are coming onto the market, most of them recyclable and in line with consumer expectations. Nevertheless, it is clear that some of them do not have the elements of recyclability on the back of the packaging. For the moment, legislation does not require all the corresponding logos to be affixed to the product. Only the Triman is mandatory since January 2015 for any person who puts a recyclable product on the French market. Pending a homogenization of instructions, each manufacturer is free to specify these elements or not on food packaging.

As a supplier of food packaging, Sipaldis makes it a point of honour that each new development has these sorting instructions on the packaging. We owe it to the consumers to make it easier for them to learn the simple gestures of recycling.

The OpinionWay survey of 19 November 2020

We have recently been challenged by the study ofOpinionWay conducted for AlkemicsThe French and Waste Sorting". It shows us that the French do not have the necessary knowledge to interpret the instructions on food packaging. The analysis shows that 70% of French people do not understand these sorting instructions. It also shows that only two logos, out of the sixteen tested with French people, are correctly identified and deciphered. This shows that there is still a long way to go before everyone can acquire the basics of successful selective sorting.

The OpinionWay study also mentions that what is most important for 57% of French people is above all recyclable packaging. The biodegradability criterion comes in second place.

Sipaldis food packaging and waste sorting logos

The environmental aspect is a key point in the development of each product designed by Sipaldis. As a supplier of food packaging, we are committed to marketing food packaging with a common denominator: recyclability. Our pastry boxes all have the recyclability logo on the back of the box. Our gold/black cardboard rounds have the food contact logo on the cardboard. Our new eco-designed product, the wood printed cardboard tray, is our best example. This tray has all the necessary elements on the back: Tidyman, Green Dot, Möbius Circle, Triman, Food Contact and the product composition logo.

This ecological support is intended to definitively replace expanded polystyrene trays, soon to be banned from sale by legislation. Our cardboard tray will eventually allow to drastically reduce the production of plastic that was used for EPS trays.
